2010 Rocky Mountain Rugby Challenge,
America's Premier U-17/U-19 Rugby Tournament
June 19-20, 2010  Aurora Sports Park

Welcome to the 2010 Rocky Mountain Challenge

For 10 years the Rocky Mountain Rugby Challenge has not only continued to generate increased interest in U-19 rugby, America’s Premier Under-17 & Under-19 Rugby Tournament, sponsored by the Eastern Rockies Rugby Football Union (ERRFU), will hold its Tenth Annual Tournament at the Aurora Sports Park on June 19-20 2010. The Rocky Mountain Challenge attracts regional all-star rugby teams from throughout the United States, from Florida to California. This year's RMC has the largest field ever.

This year, women’s rugby joins the action with four women’s teams competing. Teams from Colorado, Utah and New Mexico will meet each other on the pitch, showing everyone that rugby is a sport that can be played by everyone. The women’s teams are in the U-19 bracket.

“We are very excited to be adding four girls’ teams this year, for the first time in RMC history,” said Jeff Calhoun, RMC’s Tournament Director. “Girls and women’s rugby is one of the fastest growing sports in the US, starting with girls in elementary school. In Colorado, the TRY (Touch/Tackle Rugby Youth) organization is teaching girls and boys the sport of rugby, starting at the age of 5 years old.”

In addition to the women, twenty (20) boy’s and men’s teams from 12 states have already committed to the 2010 RMC including teams from Utah, Wisconsin, Texas, Kansas, Louisiana, Nebraska, Minnesota, Arizona, California, Florida, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and of course, Colorado.

In 2016, rugby will be an Olympic sport Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. The players for that team will be selected from all-star teams such as the ones playing at the RMC. Selectors from USA Rugby will be attending the RMC to evaluate the all-star players.

“We are proud to hold the Tenth Annual Rocky Mountain Challenge,” said Tournament Director, Jeff Calhoun. “Rugby is the fastest growing youth sport in America, and rugby will be played in the 2016 Olympics as a new sport. The Challenge is a great showcase

for teams and players from all parts of the US. It’s a great chance for more people to learn about our growing sport and get more young people involved. The players that you will see over the course of the weekend are the future USA Eagles Rugby Team, and could qualify for the 2016 US Olympic Rugby Team.”

The Tournament has two competitive divisions. One division teams players under the age of 17 and the second division teams players under the age of 19. Utah’s U-19 team won its division last year, while Wisconsin took the crown in the U-17 division.

The Rocky Mountain Challenge is one of five Regional Tournaments supported by USA Rugby and is a key part of the process that will ultimately lead to consideration for the National USA U-19/U-17 selection pool for international team play in 2010.

The regional All Star teams are comprised of the top young players competing for an opportunity to be chosen for a place in USA Rugby's Elite High Performance Development System.

The weekend event will feature over 40 matches between the participating teams, with preliminary rounds on Saturday June 19, and the semifinals and championship games played on Sunday, June 20. A banquet, honoring all players, will be held during the Tournament.
